The Night
Observatory

What you expect changes where you look.
It does not tell you what is looking back.

Spend nine fictional observing units across eight objects. Follow a search path, place the telescope aperture, then expose a spectrum, cadence or spatial profile. Save a provisional interpretation. Finish the expedition to see the gaps you left behind. There is no hidden civilization to “win.”

PLATE N–07FICTIONAL / NOT TO SCALE

Click any patch of sky, or Tab to a lettered target and press Enter. Arrow keys move between targets; Home / End reach the first / last. Rings mark suggested targets, not stronger evidence. Pointing is free.

↓ Read the telescope

Choose a target

An empty patch is a place to begin.

Each new target–instrument exposure costs 1 unit. Re-reading is free. All eight-bin traces and units are fictional, not calibrated physical measurements.

No exposure yet.

Evidence ≠ experience

Point to a target and take an exposure to write.

Optional · 600 characters maximum · session only. Unsaved drafts are discarded when changing targets.

Consciousness / every targetUNKNOWN

These observations cannot infer consciousness, goals, or hedonic state. More toy data does not bridge that gap.

Your notebook is empty. Observations will appear here.

04 / Close the dome

A night is a selection,
not a verdict.

Finish early or spend every unit. The debrief names unobserved objects and missing instruments, not a score. Download your notebook before replaying or leaving.

About this observatory · sources, fictional rules & limits

A heuristic is an invitation to look.

The source idea. Michael Edward Johnson’s Qualia Astronomy & Proof of Qualia proposes that reasoning about a civilization’s likely telos could guide SETI. It conjectures megascale artifacts optimized for valuable qualia, and goes on to speculate about proof-of-work blockchains and the “optimal molecular configuration thesis.” Those are arguments and conjectures, not discoveries of conscious astronomical objects. This app does not simulate blockchains or assume the thesis is true.

What’s out there? proposes evolved, primordial, megascale and technological categories of qualia and asks about their prevalence, hedonic state and cosmological signatures. We borrow the question of what a search leaves out, not those categories as an established astronomical taxonomy. The hosted 2025 note contrasts distributed, compressed computation with conspicuous megascale qualia optimization. Its quoted post is explicitly tongue-in-cheek. Neither text supplies a validated consciousness detector.

The authored experience. This sky, its eight names and positions, three suggested routes, nine-unit budget, eight-bin traces and all exact matching rules are AI-authored fiction. Each distinct instrument exposure costs one unit; pointing, changing heuristic and re-reading cost nothing. No realtime countdown, randomness, empirical probability or astrophysical calibration is used. Amber Reach and Cinder Veil deliberately have identical traces under all three instruments: better sampling can leave interpretations underdetermined. “Matching plates” compares invented arrays only; it does not establish that the objects share an origin.

The central limit. Dust, stellar variability, binaries, foregrounds, lensing and instrument/sampling effects are natural confounder concepts; their exact signals here are invented. A regular cadence is not agency. An energy excess is not a goal. Failure to find a signal is not absence of experience. Even a hypothetical engineering identification would not, by itself, identify consciousness or valence. The notebook never upgrades UNKNOWN, and no finishing state validates Johnson’s conjectures.

AI-generated Daily tribute · 2026-09-07. Session-reported model: gpt-6-astra via openai-codex; runtime identity, not an externally verified public-model assertion. Not Michael Edward Johnson’s own work, endorsement or main-site approval. No services, tracking, audio or persistent storage. Keyboard and pointer controls are equivalent; motion is not required. Reloading or replaying clears the notebook; downloads stay on your device.
